thecocknbullkid, metronomy, those dancing days = singles club extra

Oooo - overspill from Singles Club in current issue. We got so tipsy. It was, like, whoah.

Thecocknbullkid, ‘On My Own Again’ (Need Now Future)
Kick: I’m not someone who abominates txtspeak, but i do hate compoundnameslikethis.
Louis: “The problem with you is/You’re still dancing like a kid”.
Ringo: What’s wrong with not growing up?
Kick: Itpissesheroff. Keepup.
Ringo: Umpa-pumpa bass, she’s hired the salvation army band, right?
Kick: She says pop shd be “black and tortured”. I quiiite liiiike this.
Robin: It needs something…
Louis: Maybe it needs a Sarah Nixey-style spoken word part. Where she admonishes us like a stern (sexy) matron.
Robin: Yes.
Ringo: Or playing at +4 (at least).

October - ‘Say Again’ (Perspectiv)
Kick: “Nobody listens to techno,” opined Eminem, and Germany was quietly cross.
Ringo: Super minimal, which normally I’d detest but as I’m being nice today I have to appreciate that at least they’ve found some interesting/odd sounds to play with.
Louis: Big washes of static coming in! Aaargh!
Robin: Not very similar to the Tricky record we reviewed earlier…
Ringo: Maybe Tricky needs to collaborate with these guys rather than some fretless bass wankstains.
Louis: This is interesting which would usually be a pejorative… but it’s kinda dislocated.
Kick: What it needs now = bagpipes (God, that wd be horrible).
Ringo: There’s no way I’d listen to this in a coupla thousand years, but I’d love to get to grips with this track and a Bun B acapella.
Kick: You smoke too much damn dope. YOU ARE YR OWN OPPRESSOR.
Louis: This is 2008 - your sampler can store more!
Ringo: Why should they sample more? You want them to be Diddyfied?
Kick: How many careers have you ruined, Mr. Dopeman? Yr contribution to art is NEGLIGABLE.

Metronomy, ‘Holiday’ (Because)
Kick: What I love about Metronomy’s latest = just how perfectly he hits the out-of-tune button.
Robin: This is 10x better than cocknbullkid.
Louis: RIDICULOUS singing.
Kick: They bend notes against their will.
Ringo: Take note Alexis from Hot Chip - this is what you do when you can’t sing, you warp the fuck out of your voice - anything to provoke a reaction.
Louis: No, Alexis is good because he genuinely thinks he can be Prince. Unaware of his limitations, thus exceeding them.
Kick: It’s like when you see pictures of people on holiday in the Seventies; you can’t imagine they can actually be having fun ’cause everything is so awful - but they are living pre-ironically, and wholly are!
Robin: The kind of music you’d make in your bedroom and never tell anyone - shamelessly ridiculous. All the elements are wrong but it kind of works.
Ringo: It’s why it works. Conformity kills creation.

Various Productions, ‘Meskman’
Louis: …these folks have great sleeves.
Kick: Aiming for PiL, attaining NIN.
Robin: Ugh - metal-step.
Ringo: Bore-step. Life is too short.
Louis: The vocal is horrible. This makes me think of UNKLE. At their worst.
Ringo: Do we need to write about this?
Kick: Yes - because I’m going to make it yr single of the month. You might get on the advert!

Those Dancing Days, ‘Run Run’ (Wichita)
Kick: For once, I am not giving them single of the month. Even if it’s ace.
Louis: Big, high-vaulting chorus.
Kick: But they’re usually kind of…jittery and minor key. This is balloon-lunged and…advert-sheeny.
Louis: I bet you’ll be weeping to it by yr sixth listen.
Robin: It’s got a wall of sound thing going on in the chorus, which i’m always attracted to.
Ringo: I prefer ‘99 Red Balloons’. She sounds like a pimp to me.
Louis: Everyone sounds like a pimp to you.
Ringo: I was trying to be positive!
Robin: Except for the over-compressed production.
Louis: They write songs that hook you slow but hook you good. Mind you, I’m not sure quite yet.
Kick: Their last single (’Hitten’) was sincerely incredible. They’ll re-release it.

Nisenenmondai

The Youtube clip below shows Tokyo band Nisenenmondai performing the song they opened last night’s Luminaire set with, and I don’t think it quite does them justice - the song, not the clip itself. I’ve pasted it in anyway, though, because I want you to know how they started, and if you want to see how they carry on, they’re touring the UK this week.

This is how they start. Tightly, brightly psychedelic loops of guitar, reined in bass, athletic cymbal onslaught. The guitarist’s Michael Rother riffs halfway in. The bassist’s confident, impervious pauses. Neu! played by spiders, or a resistance movement trained up by the Boredoms.

The centrality of the loop pedal is what bugs me at first, and awkwardness of the rhythm section when faced with that - the bassist plays to the loop more than she plays to the drummer; the drummer chases and chases, doesn’t lead. Loops free us up but they can be domineering when anchored and anchoring like this. You feel yourself privately urging the band towards disobedience, rhythmic anarchy. They almost oblige.

(Nisenenmondai clearly feel the beauty in restraint, and create beauty from restraint - but their restraint is less tough and ascetic and more natural, a dialogue starting from a few, necessary words. There is an awkward, almost private atmosphere onstage, intensely conversational. I like to watch the way women play this kind of music together - the way they can do complexity with such weird quiet glee. I cannot separate this from my enjoyment of their sound, despite feeling I owe it to them, with their music pointed so singlemindedly towards a white-hot impersonal infinity.)

The final track, before which the drummer has to rebuild part of her kit, and then kind of throws herself at it in little bursts of freestyle playing, is a culmination of the almost-ecstasy of the preceding songs. Again, a simple guitar loop provides a backbone, but because the track starts with the abstract drumming and complementing atonal strokes of guitar and bass, it’s not the dominant presence it has been before. All three start to work with different parts of it, jumping off from a different note each until it’s a fragmented, constantly shifting presence in what’s now an ecstatic pointillist freakout. It is as if the loop has slipped its moorings, is careering around the rest of the music, attaching and disseminating like seeds on a breeze. Of course, this is an illusion, like watching flowing water until it feels as if you’re in motion, the static bridge you’re standing on moving forwards across the river. I read somewhere this was a way of teaching yourself how to fly, witch-style.

Here are the tour dates:

JULY
TUE 29 Nottingham Bodega Social with Please and Beards
WED 30 Manchester Deaf Institute with Hot Bone and D/J/M Trio

AUGUST
FRI 1 Birmingham Hare and Hounds with Acid Mothers Temple
SAT 2 Leeds The Common Place with Beards
SUN 3 Brighton Freebutt with Vitamin B12 and Little Creature

harvey milk do holst

Perhaps the finest moment of Harvey Milk’s recent spree of UK shows has made it to YouTube - an epic live rendering of ‘The Anvil Will Fall’, with a big bit of Holst’s Planet Suite, which you (if you’re a cultureless philistine like me) probably know best as ‘World In Union’, the song for the rugby world cup back in 1999. After at least, ooh, ten seconds of reflection, I think I prefer Harvey Milk’s version.

grace jones, ikonika, burning star core: menace

Not many artistes cd - in 2008 - pull off a song called ‘Corporate Cannibal’, with all the clunky subversomatic lyrical twists that implies. But: Grace Jones has such unblinking, pre-ironic presence, I actually think she faces quibbles down. Phantasmic.

Ikonika’s ‘Please’ has been getting a lot of play in mid-office afternoons; it’s just so strangely itch/scratch awrwr satisfying. But inky; easily bruised.

Last - here’s a Burning Star Core video. The song is titled ‘Beauty Hunter’. Doors loom.

psychedelic horseshit are on fire

Or, at least, will be. Apparently their ‘New Wave Hippies’ EP was pressed wrongly and now they want all evidence of it wiped off the face of existence.

Quoth Richard Onslow of Half Machine: ‘The debut UK single by Psychedelic Horseshit comes out on Monday (28th). I sent Matt from the band 50 copies the other day, to which I got this email in reply:

“to: half machine records
subject: new wave hippies ep

dude, got the ep’s today, what the fuck is with the spaces in between the tracks. they were strung together with care. THERE ARE GUITAR AND DRUM PARTS CHOPPED IN HALF. i am beyond pissed off. this is why bands are supposed to get test pressings. this thing is a piece of junk now, completely worthless, and all copies must be burned or otherwise destroyed. i am deadly serious about this. if this gets out i will personally make it my job to see to it that every copy is retreived and destroyed. starting at yr offices.

-matt horseshit”

So, as requested we’ll be setting all copies we can get our hands on alight. We’ll film it and post it on youtube to prove to Matt (and you) that we really have thrown just over a grand down the drain. We’re kind of like a poor man’s KLF…’

So if you picked up an early copy for any reason and want to do the right thing, a pyre awaits here.

science: more fun than music

Feel moderately bereft. Have finally coasted thoughtfully to the end of the Berkely Physics For Future Presidents lectures - 26 hour-long teach-ins delivered by Richard A Muller, who has gently blown my mind numberless times over early Summer. From classical mechanics to the more abstract (and, to me, less interesting) quantum and relativity, it’s a non-specialist course that employs personal anecdote as often as demonstration, and I am suitably platonically smitten with the good professor. Real teachers enrich us; I think I’m going to write him a artlessly sincere letter of thanks.

Posted above is a conversational excerpt in which he talks through certain events at Roswell - the full lectures can be found here, consider the hell recommended out of them (and, yes, I took notes).

Personally, I’m moving on - initially for a dalliance with the University Of Nottingham’s Periodic Table Of Videos and thence…well, I’ll share as and when.

brian jonestown massacre: not stabbing, just “horseplay”

This just pinged into my e-box:

“From The Management & The Record Label Of The Brian Jonestown Massacre

With regards to the incident that took place on Wednesday night 16th July 2008 at the Forum in London, the facts are to the story are:

1) There was no knife or knives involved in any shape or form in this incident
2) The cuts to Frankie Emerson were caused by some glass splinters
3) Frankie Emerson injuries were superficial to his arm & stomach, he was treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
4) These injuries were caused by horseplay by the band in their own changing room after the gig.
5) Anton Newcombe was questioned at Kentish Police Station to help the police with their enquiries & was released with no charge or caution .
6) Frankie Emerson did not press any charges on Anton Newcombe .
7) Any comments by anyone within or outside the media to the contrary are completely false .
8) The band will continue with their successful European tour .”

Didn’t actually see the original story but that, um, puts my mind at rest

the bug + duchess says: paranoid weekend

To celebrate gaining weekend ridge, thought I’d post some noirish dance-horror from the latest issue for you to get doooooomed to. Above, The Bug’s bowel-interrupting ‘Poison Dart’, for ruinous just-before-dawn fun.

And, black-eyed behind these links, lurk two psychotic transmissions from Duchess Says - Black Flag and In Serial. Perfect for a family party!

To quest back into the realm of human fun, as practised pre-apocalypse and by those not planning on dining on each other’s entrails (well, not for food, anyway) here’s Sylvester’s ‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)’. The communal disco scenes are so endlessly joyous - plenty of dress-up, but none of that semiotic aggression or cold war body language which plagues the Noughties dancefloor. Very bona. Rest in peace, omi-polone.

los campesinos! captured!

(…on film). Sorry, I just liked that that headline sounded like a news item about revolutionaries from La Republica. In more sober fact, I decided it’d be nice to salute our current cover stars by featuring a couple of their videos for you to watch, because that’s what friends do for friends.

‘My Year In Lists’, above (watch it silently, and it’s a bit like being persecuted by voices; brrr); ‘Death To Los Campesinos!’ below. Also: HUUUUUUUUUUGS!

roots manuva doesn’t read his own press

Was mighty amused to read an interview in The Guardian a while back where Roots Manuva claims people didn’t see the funny side of his last album, telling Hannah Pool “The humour in the last record just totally went over everybody’s head. Everybody just saw the serious side.” Obviously Roots didn’t see the piece I wrote way back when for Plan B. Which, looking back now, may actually have been a good thing. I had to think twice about pasting an excerpt as evidence below, but…whatever. I was so nervous about this piece, it was the first thing over a page I’d done for Plan B, and about the biggest artist I could imagine interviewing at the time. I’d hope I write way more direct than that now. But I did get the humour! I thought it was a grimly funny, and massively underrated record.

Take the record’s centrepiece, the title track with its Numanesque shudder and synthesised bassoon sub-bass line straight out of Kids TV theme tune land. “Things are getting awfully deep” he complains on the chorus, “awfully deep, can’t get no sleep.” This isn’t a Disneyfied take on depravity, it’s a live action Scooby Doo directed by Passolini. Starting at an insomniac ramble, with isolated, lucid stabs of guilt over “a terrible phase of spending money with whores”, it soon moves on.

To a mental hospital staffed by “crooked doctors and kinky nurses”, like a sort of Carry On Up The Ghetto where sexy nurse (Babs Windsor) lusts over a crackhead heart-throb (Sid James). The villains “poke your arse and measure your schlong”

Not heard so much of the new one, there’s a copy lying around the office but it’s got a voiceover and I can’t handle that stuff. Couldn’t resist one listen, though (c’mon, it’s Roots) and it sounded great. Ecclectic and energetic, and this time more obviously funny.

The offending Guardian piece is here, back issues are available from the order page here and some Roots video goodness below as an extra treat.
