the last of may

Maxxed out on words yesterday, so this time I’ma let the embedded media do most of the talking. Consider it a round-up of stuff from May’s issue I didn’t get round to mentioning - until now. Above, The New Bloods’ ‘Doubles’.

Next, Envy’s debut, ‘Tongue-Twister’ (note there’s also a making of video here).

My favourite moment in this all-conquering performance from Rolo Tomassi is 1:01, when their confrere in front row turns to camera and demonstrates approval via face. Seems a meme waiting to happen - live shows shrunk to become the backdrop to reaction shots - subliminal heckling cd follow.

Finally, Diamanda Galas prefaces an ultimately unsinkable reading of ‘Gloomy Sunday’ with a sharp remark; drawing a line between popular and populist?

euromission

Was sad to hear Sebastien Tellier’s audacious bid to recapture Eurovision for individual creativity (as opposed to dreary political cabaret) failed - he’s interviewed in the next Plan B about it, and seemed in winning form. Can’t say I watched it this year, but am told tactical voting has worsened still. If it really is so predictable, people shd do so, and publicise their forecasts beforehand - adding a feedback loop into the process might complicate the decision-making at the other end (no one likes to be told they’re a puppet; see below). It wd even be a gd way for those involved to study the current state of the union (one thing the years since Iraq has proven is just how Blair’s administration managed to turn popular sentiment against them, continentally).

Still personally think the contest’s high-point is France Gall’s ‘Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son’ (1965) as written by Serge Gainsbourg. Both performances of the (winning) song are on YouTube, and it’s fascinating to see how they differ. The first is careful and polite, the second (post-success) immeasurably more relaxed, quietly imperious, a shift from trial to pleasure, singer to star - it has the ironclad self-satisfaction that’s the bedrock and fossil fuel for any diva.

Not that that particular story ends there - that the then eighteen yr-old was cementing her career with a song about being a doll (lyrical analysis here) shows her mentor’s penetrating grasp of pop dynamics, plus flair for irony. His various other kinks wd come to the fore with subsequent hit ‘Les Sucettes’ (’Lollipops’) - when she learnt the second meaning, she broke off the partnership - and talks through it here. I hope they made it up before he died.

all that fall

Today I bring you The Wonderful And Frightening World Of Mark E Smith, a rock doc most notable for securing the co-operation of its subject (“Media-class funding! BEER FROTH!”). It’s in nine parts, I trust you to find the rest.

There are a multitude of YouTube interviews with Mark, from scattererd eras, but was particularly struck/made mushy by how (comparatively) unprickly and bashfully jovial he was with Brix by his side… (“Hormonal torpor in the TV studio…uh!”) I’d never seen or heard her Adult Net side-project before; currently unconvinced, to say the L.S.T…

Full list of exes at the band’s lovingly byzantine unofficial site. In honour of The Fall’s literary origin I’ve named this post in similar fashion (cd have been a competition if not for fucking Google etc - “Trivia! Is! Increasing! Ly! Omnipresent-ah!”)

tubby t

Just hearing that Harlsden dancehall MC Tubby T has just died after a stroke at the age of 32. Listening to 1xtra now they’re playing his hit ‘Ready She Ready’, a track I listened to about fifty times last month reviewing it as part of the comp An England Story for the current issue of Plan B. Two months ago his death may not have meant that much to me, but the whole process of writing that piece knocked me sideways as a lot of sounds I’d only heard before incidentally suddenly came into awesomely sharp focus. I went in for London Posse and Stush, I came out with them plus Papa Levi and Tubby T. Digging through his catalogue I found his voice on tunes I’d known for years without checking the credits (yeah, my bad), tunes like Fallacy’s ‘Big And Bashy’, Sticky’s ‘Tales From The Hood’. And it was some voice, warm and party with a melancholic edge, every note an embodiment of the philosophy voiced in ‘Tales From The Hood’,

“Me no want no bling bling
Me no want no pinkie rings
Just give me the microphone
I was born to sing
Although I stand alone
I will surely bring
Peace and love”

I’m still no expert, but I know enough now to understand the country has lost a big talent. RIP.

the sound of subtext

Am personally more engaged by the Errors vid for ‘Toes’, above, than I am Justice’s much-amped ‘Stress’ - while the latter offers verite stylized into something like a self-consciously ultraviolent perfume advert, the former brings a home video palette and one simple idea - teenagers as feudal warriors (or, I guess, Trojans).

And if that ends with a question mark, John & Jehn (interviewed in current issue) add actual subtitles, to better appreciate their sensual adventures in b&w bohemia. GO!

onward, endlessly…

Finished the first rough of novel on Sunday. Zero euphoria, probs because I’m pretty focused on what needs doing to it in next couple of weeks - when I hope to experience at least (at last) a mental reward…

I measure writing sessions in albums, usually - two albums is a good stretch, followed by a twenty-minute nap. Stuff I listened to this weekend, especially, includes White Noise (above), Moondog and Burial, although there was lots of less song-based stuff, too (it’s true I only ever really listen to drone, noise or ambient stuff in precisely this way - a means of maintaining a mood with minimal detours or distractions, I guess..?)

transcend the weekend

Those of you who already subscribe to the weekly Plan B emailer will have memorized my ‘Stay Indoors’ playlist, featuring Le Mystere de voix Bulgares (above), an all-new (non-album) single from Marnie Stern, Kelley Polar (RMXed by Caribou), The Bug aaand Micachu.

Those who haven’t, watch the above and imagine what in the wild world you’re missing…

working together

Ever since seeing Chilly Gonzales and the Le Together Ensemble at the ICA a couple of weeks back I’ve been digging through my old Gonzales albums and remembering how back in 2001 I was absolutely convinced ‘Take Me To Broadway’ was going to make him extremely famous (it didn’t). After a couple of years away tinkling the ivories, he’s back with his new album Soft Power, and it’s a little ray of sunshine.

Thing with Chilly is that he’s a big ol’ goof (obviously) but also a massive talent - check out this interview with him circa Solo Piano a few years back.

Full review of the show in June’s issue, so look out for that.
