enter the weekend: twisted by design
continuing the auto-resurrect of the Plan B blog, every friday there’ll be an annotated playlist from an indieclub, musicblog or recordshop. today, it’s the former - Cardiff’s own Twisted By Design…
(above image is nothing to do with the club, but i cdn’t grab pix from their website, and it came up in Google Images when i typed ‘Twisted By Design’, so it’s probably God/Satan’s will that i use it here…)
Describe yr club in ONE SENTENCE. Twisted by Design is probably the best indie night in Cardiff, yeah?
Give us yr top five current club hits? (and a sentence - or even TWO - about each please?)
1. ‘Heimdalsgate Like A Prometheus Curse’ - Of Montreal
Single of the year for me so far. Just pure pop genius…
2. ‘Sali Mali’ - Threatmantics
Local heroes have produced a stormer of a single which hits you between the eyes from the first note.
3. ‘You! Me! Dancing!’ - Los Campesinos!
Predictable, but the song is about Twisted By Design, and it still whips up a frenzy on the dancefloor. Every single one of us is twisted by design!
4. ‘Young Folk’ - Peter, Bjorn and John
Insanely catchy tune and a dancefloor full of people puckering up…
5. ‘Hummer’ - Foals
Microkorg? Microhorse!
Artistes or outfits you?ll hear at yr club but not (m)any others? I can only speak locally but there’s nowhere I know which plays stuff like Lee Hazlewood, Herman Dune, Jeff Lewis, Of Montreal, Tom Waits and Rammstein.
The most common look/accessory amongst yr audience? It’s not really a place you expect to see a common look, but obviously you’re a nobody if you ain’t wearing your gindrinker badge.
Without yr night, the ______ of yr town wd have nowhere to go? (um, fill in gap please). The ‘non-scene antiscene got-to-be-seen unseen scene scensters’.
Describe the atmosphere you strive for. Just a relatively safe place playing quality music. Being on womanby street, the indie street of Cardiff and refusing to play stuff like The Stone Roses and Oasis keeps certain people at bay.
Best night ever?
I released a 22-track CD called This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The 22 Of Us (all local bands including Los Campesinos!’ first ever release). We did an eight-band launch gig at Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff - eight bands in six hours with no more than 10 mins changeover between bands. It ran perfectly with all bands giving their all. You can’t get better than that
The weirdest request you ever had? Someone asked for Slipknot, the week that Half Man Half Biscuit released ‘Vatican Broadside’. It was a great pleasure to dedicate it to the requester with the immortal line, “Who the fucking hell are Slipknot?” It’s now become Twisted’s national anthem…
The most common? Probably ‘Boy With The Arab Strap’ by Belle & Sebastian, although I dont tend to play that often anymore.
The most important nugget of advice to people looking to start their own night/happening is… Just do it!
Gary Twisted deejays at The Dude Abides tonight (Clwb Ifor Bach), while the next Twisted By Design proper will be 29th at Dempsey’s (actually, i’ve just been informed this date has been canxed, so next is October 6th. as you were…) details on the Twisted MySpace
