outside the singles club…

readers may have noticed that we’ve rethunked singles club and this month, myself, Everett, Frances and Louis hunkered down in the Plan B bunker, glued to our respective laptops and did it IN REALTIME via mssngr. of course, this meant that we cdn’t fit in everything we wanted to - so here’s the extra:

Helen Love - Junk Shop Discotheque
Kick: I know lots of people who I really like that really like Helen Love.
Frances: Me too.
Louis: What 9th rate indie band will they namecheck this time? I think it will be… Babyshambles!
Everett: Didn’t helen love invent bis?
Louis: Swansea’s a bit like Brighton in that there’s a lot of 40-year old indie children there. It’s like Peter Pan with hairclips.
Everett: The vocoder reminds me of the X-Factor.
Frances: This kind of music only sounds good when it sounds like it cost 50p to make.
Everett: Helen Love are totally fake, that’s their whole point

Slaughtered - Itchy Tits
Frances: She likes Kate Bush. And polly harvey
Kick: ‘Histrionic’.
Frances: GOTH
Louis: Apparently if you don’t tape up your nipples before running a marathon they bleed.
Kick: How do you know that?
Frances: Common sense innit.

Blood Red Shoes - You Bring Me Down
Everett: Steve once totally tore up a CTCL evening at the Albert.
Louis: Cat On Form were very good.
Kick: More dynamics than i remembered. It’s got *gears*.
Everett: It’s a BIT LIKE mcarthy without the venom.
Louis: I think this single will be justly successful (it is far less minimal that I anticipated).

Metronomy - Trick Or Treatz
Kick: Repetitive beats.
Frances: INDIE DANCE. Hot Chip. High voice.
Kick: I like the treated vocals. Sounds like a answer machine malfunction. It’s actually quite soulful, in a weird, vacuum-sealed way.
Louis: Apart from the fart noise, which is great, it’s entirely predictable. I hope it does something surprising now.
Kick: There’s an extremely glowing Plan B quote on his press release.
Everett: I did a show with him once, Metronomy - he stayed quite still
Kick: I like it, but quietly.

Dr. Octagon - Trees
Kick: This is really great, actually - sounds like someone doing a kneeslide over a stylophone. That weird syncopated wet bass thing he’s got going on. The entire track is liquid apart from his vox and the beats.
Frances: Yeah, it’s really slippery!
?louis: He’s right though: trees are dying
frances: “Trees may be extinct like the elephant???” They are not extinct
Everett: I like the fact he’s nearly named after a spiderman villain.
Kick: If it’s between doc oc and spiderman - I’M WITH THE BADD GUY.
Frances: I think he’s got elephants and dinosaurs mixed up.

Hot Chip - Sexual Healing
Kick: It’s like Marvin Gaye bleached and shaved.
Louis: It’s so wrong it’s right though
Kick: It’s like getting very slightly aroused during confession.
Everett: I don’t actually like the original
Louis: That quite weak-sounding, white soul. When it’s works it’s actually quite touching. I don’t think they’re being ironic either.
Frances: No, they’re not ironic at all. And that is commendable.

Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag
Everett: The extra ‘nag’ is presumably by way of a reference to the same Cabaret Voltaire single that the Long Blondes also reference in ‘Lust In The Movies’.
Kick: I like spoken word so long as the words are good - and his generally are.
Louis: This is better than their early stuff. The first time I saw them I thought they were pathetic.
Kick: I can see that fans wd learn all the words to this. Song as soapbox…
Everett: The’y re like The Fall, minus the alcohol. And ready wit.
Kick: The Fall are massively more musically fractured, though. And open-ended, I guess.
Everett: Can i throw another obscure eighties reference at ya? Yeah Yeah Noh, but popular.
Frances: I really really really don’t like this. Sorry.

The Soft Litees - Girlkillsbear
Kick: This is like a low watt bulb. Or a pastel hoody.
Louis: We will never get these two minutes back.

The Cold War Kids - We Used To Vacation
Kick: It’s american. And hyped. PREPARE TO HATE IT.
Frances: I HATE IT (already) ?all that effort. For nothing…
Everett: Is this emo?
Kick: Just indie - pro indie.
Everett: Is it shit?
Frances: Yes.
Everett: He moves me to thoughts of violence
Frances: The whole thing is forced. They’re playing REALLY REALLY HARD. And what are they playing? Some stupid downwards descending chords. It’s like if they hit the piano hard enough we’ll BELIEVE THEM.
Kick: They look like awkward tourists on the sleeve - HMM…
Frances: It will be on the OC. I would put money on that - where one of the boys is having a kind of crisis in his head and wants to punch a wall but just CAN’T MAKE HIMSELF DO IT.

120 Days - Come on…
kick: It sounds like one of the bikes from Tron going quite slowly.
Everett: Does anyone have a copy of Tron I can borrow? I really wanna see that film again, it gets referenced so much…
