the problem i always had with the jam was their overpowering retro-ness which always alluded to a love of poppy soul giving you a greater standing on the cool-o-meter. I loved soul music, a lot of punks did, but we didn't have to wear it as a holier than thou badge. which is what i always felt weller and the jam did... which kind of gave a very different spin on their political stance - they celebrated difference and enjoyed the 'otherness' of black soul music like a 'good' tory manifesto...

how's things et?

Style Council were completely ace, for the first few years - but that unreleased album should have stayed unreleased. The box set was nigh unlistenable, too.

I remember seeing Geno in about '87. He stroked his bald head and told "the laydeez" that his nob was even shinier. Jesus.

Where stand you on the Style Council?
