Tuesday 11 October

Been wondering whether to go to Ladyfest in Brighton - Afrirampo, Vale Poher, Electrelane…Helen McCookerybook even. But I’m not a big fan of going places where I’m not welcome, plus there’s a baby at home who does want me. I figure I’ll just stay in.

Discovered the title of my Sonic Youth book via SY’s message board last night: Psychic Confusion. Hmm. Not sure about that at all. I’ll have to see whether I can convince my book company to change it. Any suggestions?

Also: first interview I ever conducted was with Young Marble Giants in 1980. I wasn’t writing for anyone, not even a fanzine - I just wanted to meet the band, as I was totally in love with them. So I phoned up Rough Trade and got to talk to them, face to face, same time as The Face. My article never appeared because… well, I didn’t write for anyone. Last night, I rediscovered the tape and - cringing mightily at the asinine, creepy-crawly fanboy questions I was asking - passed it along to Emily to transcribe and see if there’s anything worth using from it. I also discovered some black and white photographs I took at the session. (Not very good, but I do have the negatives.)

I don’t understand. Why would you not be welcome at Ladyfest? I thought it was a celebration of female performers? Surely it doesn’t matter who the audience is?

Sonic Life?
Sonic Death?

There’s only been one book about SY, so most of the obvious names are still up for grabs. You could call it "Daydream Believer", only people would think it’s about the Monkees.

And whenever I’ve gone to Ladyfest things there’ve been masses of boys present, so I shouldn’t worry on that score. Afri Rampo are unmissable in a very profound sense.

i don’t imagine anyone is particually bothered whether you go or not, i cerainly don’t remember ladyfest being about everett true - until of course the history is rewritten.

Hey ET!

Psychic Confusion is a brilliant title for your Sonic Youth book, mate Psychic is one of my top five favourite words. It is very fitting for the subject matter and will probably lend a magic to your writing of it. If not I have got a good one you may or may not like. ‘Dreaming Backwards’ is my suggestion. Its the song title of a track I got off Soulseek by a eighties band called Buba and the Shop Assistants’ I googled them and apparently they became ‘The Shop Assistants and as you will know were part of the c86 scene you are known to have champioued zealously. (I have got their Peel Session on vinyl from a record fair and it is great. I love that fuzzy guitar sound. The Shop Assistant could squat and piss over Franz Ferdinand but the only problem with that is that the Franz boyz would probably get off on it. Hang on, wtf am I rambling about???. So yeah, ‘Dreaming Backwards’ because it sort of links ‘Daydream Nation’ -one of their best- albums to the fact that you are going backwards and telling the story of the Sonic Youth. Id be well chuffed if you used that.:-) Heyy, you could even glue it together with your choice..?? Oh I dont fucking know, call it what you think feels right. Psychic Confusion is bang on the barley wine, though. I like that.
