Thursday 1 September

Just in the process of finishing up my first ever mix tape for our son Isaac. All the songs on it are taken from recent charity store/boot fair acquisitions, recently sent CDs and the odd random record lying around my office. Tried to keep it upbeat throughout, with a few quieter numbers for when we want him to mellow out. The new Franz Ferdinand single and Orange Juice would’ve been the next two tracks if there’d been room. Any suggestions for a second tape gratefully received. And I’m happy to dub copies for any other local parents. Or interested parties.

SIDE ONE
Misty’s Big Adventure - Two Brains
Ian Dury And The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
Rachel Sweet - Hairspray
The Long Blondes - Lust In The Movies
Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry
Tenpole Tudor - Swords Of A Thousand Men
Kitty Daisy & Lewis - Honolulu Rock’N'Roll-A
Buddy Holly - Heartbeat
The Muppets - Mah Na Mah Na
The Tornados - Telstar
Ramones - I Want You Around
Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Egyptian Reggae
Squeeze - Up The Junction
BEF feat Gary Glitter - Suspicious Minds
The Chefs - You Get Everywhere

SIDE TWO
The Bear Necessities (The Jungle Book OST)
I Wan’na Be Like You (The Jungle Book OST)
The Modettes - Twist And Shout
The Concretes - Miss You
Misty’s Big Adventure - Never Stops Never Rests Never Sleeps
Supergrass - Coffee In The Pot
Dan Sartain & The Serpientes - Cobras Pt II
Devendra Banhart - I Feel Just Like A Child
Desford Colliery Band - Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines
Oompa Loompa song Pt I
The Diskettes - Jump Up
Oompa Loompa song Pt II
Calvin Johnson - Rabbit Blood
Oompa Loompa song Pt III
The Research - C’mon Chameleon
Oompa Loompa song Pt IV
Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Ice Cream Man (live)

I think I want to have kids just so I can raise them on Jonathan Richman’s music…

I think I would add to this list a great cover of The Hives ‘Hate to Say I Told You So’ by The Flu.

An mp3 of this tune can be found at:

I have found that a mixture ‘Six Organs Of Admittance’ and ‘Stars Of The Lid’ have a very calming influence on my 7 week old baby. Our 5 year old has a very low threshhold for listening to music, although brief spurts ‘Lightning Bolt’ or ‘Lighting Bulb’ as he prefers to call them can get him to trash the sitting room in very short order. A friend who works in a nursery found the ‘Konono No 1′ CD I gave him had a great calming effect on his young charges, as well as, predictably, Raymond Scott’s ‘Soothing Sounds For Baby’.

"I think I want to have kids just so I can raise them on Jonathan Richman’s music…"

That’s kinda selfish don’t you think? Kids aren’t Airfix kits deigned for your petty amusement.

haha slightly throwaway comment.

I’m not sure that would be my #1 reason to have kids….

Should have just gone the whole hog and given him the Muppet album in it’s entirety. My favourite ever record.

I’ll second what Milo said. I’ve been forced to listen to it thousands of times by my children, but I still end up putting it on for myself from time to time when they’re in bed.

I know you’ve got something by Calvin but surely LOADS of early Beat Happening is a must!

Mah-na-mah-na is of course originally from a Swedish soft porn flick. Not the kind of thing that first comes to mind when choosing music for kids. Although I must admit it’s a big favourite with my 2-year old. (Piero Umiliani’s original that is).
As for suggestions for volume 2, the upbeat songs on Kevin Rowland’s My Beauty used to go down well when my son was a month or two old.

My girlfriend insists that only Camera Obscura’s ‘Underachievers Must Try Harder’ will lull my 11 month old to sleep in the car on the way to nursery. Which was great for the first few times cos I like it but after 3 months, 3 days a week…

I have very fond memories of coming home from work and slow dancing round the living room with her every night when she was just a few months old, Neil Youngs Greatest Hits on the stereo, desparate to keep her happy. Eventually we realised she was tired so just put her in bed for the night. Don’t think I’ve listened to that CD since
