Wednesday 22 June

Still been recording a song a day for the baby - dispensed with guitar altogether (except the odd note), and scorn piano (barring the occasional chord). Now, I rely upon my trusted metronome and layering voices in convoluted chantsong. Andrew Clare tells me (favourably) that it reminds him of NYC street performer Moondog.
Mental note to self: check out Moondog.

Last night, chatted to Peter Davis (Your Flesh, Creature Booking), one of the men behind Courtney’s initial rise to minor stardom and also involved with Melvins for quite a while. He reels off a long list of bands for whom signing major label deals in the mid-90s (post-Nevermind) was the kiss of death and gives me a great quote about Melvins, most of which i’ve forgotten - something about how they’re great when they have one moment of madness within the structured mayhem but not the other way around.

Thursady 16 June

Mild craziness yesterday.
Isaac went through four changes of clothes, and this morning the remains of his umbilical cord dropped off. He responds well to my singing a variation on a classic children’s lullaby to him…as the sparse crowd at the Ocean Rooms did later, where I was called in as a last-minute replacement to the ever-wonderful Misty’s Big Adventure and Bobby McGee’s. (The latter charmed their way into our hearts at soundcheck where the pair, decked up like old school Mr Billy Childish and a flower dress girl, duelled with banjos and sang endless variations on the theme of ‘Don’t Dump Me’.) I sang variations on themes to breast-feeding (’Please Don’t Bite’) and even threw in an extended version of ‘Do Nuts’ as I was feeling so chipper to be out. Eva gamely supported on improvised backing vocals and improvised WASP synthesizer as I engaged in vocal patterns to match. A member of Misty’s waxed lyrical over the fine PragVEC (circa ‘78), a proto-post-punk female-led band who also used a WASP to great effect.
Set over, applause gathered, I immediately set off straight for home once more on my bicycle.
