45rpm

Hello Frances,

Here are some answers to your questions.

First many people report that their sense of absolute pitch declines with age. We have found this to be true. After the age of 45 the answers to our acoustic test are often a semi-tone off and usually in the sharp direction. The reason for this is unclear but it probably has something to do with anatomical changes in the auditory system with age. There are important structures in the inner ear that are changed. You are one of a small group, with absolute pitch, that report they play in a rock band. Possibly the sound level could speed up this process. It is well known that loud sounds do contribute to hearing loss and possibly other auditory defects may occur.

I love rock ‘n’ roll. It has given me years of pleasure, and the ears of a 45 year old.

Although it’s been a while now since I played in a loud band, and while I feel sad sometimes not to be up there flinching happily next to the drum kit like I used to, there’s a clarity in my ear canals I probably haven’t had since the age of 13 or something (year zero: before I started going to gigs). The move to solo artist/ drone duo stuff wasn’t just the last gasp of a late-20s egomaniac desperate to have her own project, then. It was for the good of my auditory health.

Ha ha aha. That’s hillarious, not your unfortunate condition, might I add, but the way you ‘put it’. Oh sorry, hold on a minute…..CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? AH…. GOOD.

Anyway. just thought Id let you know that there is a ‘rag and bone’ shop round our way, (East London, that is) knocking out deaf aids for a pound each. I can pick you half a dozen up if you like?

I will leave it with you to mull over. I SAID, I WILL LEAVE IT WITH YOU TO… Oh nevermind! :-(

I’m sure Herr Nite’s seven string detonations will help to knock that perfect pitch out of true.

BTW: Are we to expect you to perform with the tone generator ensemble on Thursday?

Yeah, it’s all Nite’s fault…although actually I blame They Came From The Stars - that band was LOUD.

I don’t think the hearing aids are gonna help, but thanks all the same. As far as I know, they aren’t much use in helping me distinguish between an A and an A flat the way I used to. And shouting at me is not gonna help that either.

Iotar - yes indeed, I will be playing the tone generation game this Thurs. In fact, I’m finding that messing with six tone generators at once is great practice for honing your sense of pitch. We had a run-through last night and it sounds like the BBC Radiophonics Workshop on Xanax.

Know what you mean. I should really start wearing ear plugs to gigs. I was feeling the effects of the Magic Band and Sonic Youth gigs for a couple of days. Mind you, standing in front of the speakers probably didn’t help…

>>BBC Radiophonics Workshop on Xanax.

Fab - do you think it’ll get the punters grooving? Perhaps we could run a big Chinese-style mass tai chi session in front of the stage.

I’m bringing the blue Daisyrock along to this one. Apart from looking dead cool that axe really takes to a bit of fuzz.
