“That was one of the strangest things I ever saw,” comments Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner.
“When we first saw you on stage,” remarks YYYs manager Asif, “we thought, ‘Man it must be cold up there’…either that or your guitarist is wearing a really thin T-shirt. That was incredible. Seriously.”
“That was cool,” says a Locust. (Now, there’s respect!)
“Afterwards, I hung around to see what the audience thought,” my wife reveals. “The crowd was split into two sections. There were all the scenesters who’d come down from London to see the show, and they stood out a mile, just didn’t fit in. Anyway, they got a little pissed off with all the feedback during the last number, but all the younger members were really intrigued and quite into it, kept saying ‘I’ve never seen anything like that before’. So that was definitely good.”
“I woke up this morning/And everything felt the same/I woke up this morning/And everything felt the same…eh, Everett?” (Random punter to self.)
“It was scary how angry you looked on stage,” comments my wife once more. (Well, Jesus. I was a little worse the wear, and nervous cos I love the Old Market so much.)
All I was doing was watching the small group of girls who were hanging out at the bottom of my mic, clearly having a hard time believing their eyes - first they’d look stage-left where Danya was standing, proudly fully exposed in her art and attire, dumbstruck by the sight of a near-naked lady playing cool, ragged noise guitar: then they’d all (as one) look stage-right to where I was dressed in my sports gear, blowing hard at my e-flat horn, no mics around. It was the same girls, though, who cheered the loudest when I gave my little speech about, “Why don’t bands fuck off after they play their one or two good songs instead of hanging round for another 12?”
I suspect my friends who’d been at Russell’s Prom Night in Hove post-New Black the previous night particularly appreciated my new song, “It’s Five In The Morning And I’m Going To Get Fucked Up”. Or, as Louis Jordan put it, “What’s The Use Of Getting Sober When You’re Going To Get Drunk Again?” I covered a Billy Childish song, too - for all of five seconds.
“Did you enjoy that?” I was asked afterwards. I dunno. I was kinda mad Alice didn’t lead Danya on by her nipple, like they’d been threatening beforehand.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs also played. Anyone else notice the resemblance to Whitesnake?

I always fancied Steve Buscemi to play Everett True.

That’s two people now who, upon hearing that I’ve been painting, asked “What? A picture?” So I think I will - in-between planting seeds, hating Charles Cross and listening to old Sixties sides. I find it impossible to visualise inside my head, and can’t even frame a stick figure on paper, so I’ll revert to my trade. Colour. I see words in blocks of colour. Mostly grey.

I don’t wake up screaming at five am most mornings. I don’t lie on the floor for hours on end. I don’t spend my wages for mindless hours down the arcade. I don’t find myself shoved needlessly on the underground. I don’t revel in riches drawn from exploiting those I percieve as weaker to me. I don’t sign on. I don’t sign off. I managed to flick that switch in my head to OFF years ago - a combination of endless hours spent playing Dr Mario on the Gameboy, avoiding TV and the media (both print and web) and adult life, and brain fatigue caused by too much alcohol. All I ever wanted to do was not think, have no imagination because it’s always imagination that trips you up.
I like to sing along lustily to songs with recognisable tunes - Lesbo Pig, Ramones, The Legend!
I appear on TV, but only if people don’t have to pay me.
I am Everett True, media renegade.

Spent much of last night trying to convince Yeah Yeah Yeahs they should go on stage and play the same song 10 times over, identical. Brian - dual haircut, Kramer lookalike he now is, flexing his wrist muscles - seemed game. Nick looked scared. Karen… well, she didn’t even notice, too busy flouncing. I was inspired (and drunk: on coffee, tiredness and whiskey) by the example of support band The Locust, mighty and inspirational, 25 seconds of song, 1/2 second of applause, 2 seconds of booing, 3 minutes of setting instruments for next cycle to begin. And they wore insect masks! Brilliant. Didn’t stick around for YYYs as I was scared I’d be dragged into some sort of shiny mini-skirted debauchery, and rather fancied cuddling up to my wife back in Brighton.
Jon Slade called at 11.20pm to tell me I was in the same building as him: I replied that I wasn’t, unless he was hiding behind the sofa. I want to cover two songs at our show on Sunday, two lines of each song only, the second improvised. Billy Childish and Black Flag. Guess I could just write some new songs. Hands all covered in paint now - the pink stripe is finished, and the annoying blue bookcase in the corner is now an annoying caramel cream bookcase in the corner, painted to the strains of Jimmy Pursey preaching in Sham 69. TELL US THE TROOF, Jim, indeed.
The other meetings in London varied from surreal (dancing about architecture) to depressing (finance, and arts council cartels, and the way money takes precedence over everything) to exploratory (Spektrum, and naked hippie children chained in NZ) to tired… The bulbs on the end of the spring onions have exploded into feral seed pods. And the Bridal Veil is coming up a rare treat.
In other news…no, I better not relate that.

Man, I’m pissed off with myself. Big day in London later, and couldn’t sleep. Too hyped up. Great editorial meeting yesterday (not too many arguments over cups). Sarah’s photos of Erase Errata totally knocked me on my ass. On the cover! Now. (So where’s the interview I should have done?) Everyone agreed Andrew’s provisional cover illustration for the debutante issue of Plan B rocked: he’s already redesigning it. Frances complimented our choice of pink stripe in the living room. David full of neat ideas for front section. !!! album rocks. As does Spektrum. Chris and Anna-Marie are having a meeting at the ICA tomorrow, see if we can get this interactive media Plan B approach happening. Yeah Yeah Yeahs date only three days away (but first, the mighty Todd, the lovely La Momo and new kids New Black at the Butt: nice).
But anyway. I’m pissed off with myself. Haven’t slept, and got six meetings in London today - publishing, architecture, finance, news, music, PR and live concert. FUCK!
